Looking to revitalize the neo-traditional sounds that fellow Kentuckians Ricky Skaggs and Keith Whitley pioneered in the '80s, Simpson went solo. By the end of the year, he was opening for Dwight Yoakam in front of a sold-out audience in Mission, Texas.
